Heading Assesment Of Donor in Renal Transplantation

Prof. Neil Sheerin

Abstract

Kidney transplantation is the best treatment for patients with End Stage Renal Disease. However, there are numerous challenges facing both established and developing kidney transplant programmes. Patients with ESRD often have other co-morbidities, particularly as the rates of diabetes ,obesity and hypertension increase in a population. This increases the risk associated with surgery and impacts on longer termpatients and graft survival. The number of donors is usually less than the number of potential recipients, highlighting the need to optimize utilization of transplant kidneys. KDIGO has recently updated its guidelines on assessment of prospective transplant recipients. I was part of the group that drew up these guidelines and will summarise the main factors that we should consider when assessing a potential donor’s fitness to receive a kidney transplant.
